How do I obtain a Social Security Number (SSN)?
Step 1. To obtain a Social Security Number, you must be pre-approved for one of the requirements below:
- Working on Campus
- Working on Curricular Practical Training Internship or Co-op (CPT)
- Working on post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT)
You can only continue onto the next steps if you meet one of these requirements!
Step 2. Start the process online
Request a Social Security Number (SSN) card online and provide your documentation to the local Social Security (SSA) office.
After the application is submitted online, you will receive a confirmation number which you must print out and bring to your local Social Security Administration Office within 45 calendar days along with their supporting documentation.
You may be eligible to schedule an appointment before visiting your local Social Security office or card center.
Step 3. Check SSA website for all required documents
Your documents must be unexpired and must show your name and date of birth or age. Visit SSA website by clicking on Noncitizen on the left-hand side to find out which documents are required for your SSN card request in addition to the following documents mentioned below:

Step 4. After SSA verifies all documents submitted in person and completes the request, the SSN card will be received within business days.
(Students on OPT must wait until your approved OPT start date to apply for an Social Security Number.)
